Illocutionary Act Based Translation of Dialogues

چکیده
A new dialogue translation method called the illocutionary act translation method is designed for translating speakers' intentions conveyed by rich expressions in dialogues between humans. One of the most significant characteristics of this method is that it is pragmaticsbased. That is, translation of utterances representing illocutionary acts, which consist of illocutionary forces and propositional contents, is possible while most conventional MT methods are based on syntactic or semantic information and concerned with propositional contents only. The new method extracts illocutionary act relationships from input utterances by using semantic-pragmatic representations called illocutionary act types. These types consist of language-independent illocutionary act concepts and language-dependent propositional content concepts. The method then transfers these into target language illocutionary act types, and finally generates target language utterances. This method combines the features of the transfer approach and the interlingual approach.

متن کاملTranslation of Anthroponyms in Children’s Cartoons: A Comparative Analysis of English Dialogues and Persian Subtitles
The impact of animated cartoons on children has already been emphasized by quite many researchers. The present study aimed to investigate the strategies Iranian subtitlers of English animated cartoons used in re n- dering English anthroponyms in cartoons. To this aim, two theoretical frameworks were employed: Van Coillie's Model of Translating Proper Names and Fernandes’s Model of Proper N...
متن کاملA Model for Processing Illocutionary Structures and Argumentation in Debates
In this paper, we briefly present the objectives of Inference Anchoring Theory (IAT) and the formal structure which is proposed for dialogues. Then, we introduce our development corpus, and a computational model designed for the identification of discourse minimal units in the context of argumentation and the illocutionary force associated with each unit. We show the categories of resources whi...
متن کاملSpeech Acts, Dialogues and the Common Ground
The formal semantics of speech acts, even in the classical framework of illocutionary logic, requires considerations that go beyond individual speech activity and beyond the interpretation of individual sentences. We show how the formal semantics of speech acts can be extended to take into account the social effects and interactive aspects of illocutionary activity. To illustrate our approach, ...
